CHSM General Store

Complete High School Maize, the district's alternative high school, has opened its General Store in the Reflection Ridge Retirement Community thanks in part to an Instructional Grant from the Maize Education Foundation.  This $1,000 grant provided funds for the students to purchase start-up inventory for the store, which had it's grand opening on May 15, 2018.

Led by CHSM math teacher, Michelle Hilliard, the store provides multiple opportunities for the students who are operating it. Working in the store allows students to complete contracts toward the completion of their high school diploma - especially in subjects like math.

It's not just counting change - it's creating formulas to calculate markup, profit and sales tax on the different items sold in the store - and so much more!

In addition to the educational opportunities the store is providing, students are receiving invaluable experiences and lessons as they interact with their customers - the residents at Reflection Ridge.

Aside from the relationships that are being created, students and residents are discovering opportunities to teach each other. As many of the residents are retired educators, they are looking forward to opportunities to tutor the students. Additionally, students will be teaching the residents how to use their smart phones.

If you're in the area, stop by and see the store in action!
